DANCE ARTISTIC RESIDENCY GULU NORTHERN UGANDA
Northern Uganda, Acholi-Land is a multicultural frontier region where Central Sudanic, Eastern Nilotic, Luo languages and worlds meet.
The Acholi as a distinct and collective ethnic identity, have occupied the center stage of national politics since 1962. They were the backbone of the first Obote regime (1962-71). Partly because of that, they were the principal during Amin’s reign of resilience and terror from 1971 to 1979. Since 1986, Northern Uganda was also the battleground between the National Resistance movement government and successive ethnic-inspired rebel groups within the region, leading into 20 years of war.
Built upon Art of Resilient, this self-funded, year-long open residency nestled in the heart of Gulu, Northern Uganda, invites and provide dance artists from across the globe with an incubation space, under the suns of Northern Uganda, where stories of resilience intersect with noble movements like the majestic totemic elephant, folklore and drum sounds, artists are offered a sanctuary to research, interact, create, experiment and present, re-imagining the 20 years of war in the region.
