"For decades, a generation of Northern Uganda people were born and raised in war", more than 2 million people were displaced, 30 thousand children were abducted, and many were forced to serve as child soldiers.
Founded from the background of child soldiership, poverty and trauma from past war events in Northern Uganda, Geoffrey Oryema, the founder and now director of Watwero dance initiative felt peace at heart in practicing dance "creative art and culture", a peace that no other activity or society would give him, in order to heal from the aftermath of the war.
Geoffrey, together with his friends then decided to share the peace with the community of Northern Uganda and beyond through the creation of watwero dance initiative.
Watwero to date uses creative art and culture as a source of peace, fun and healthiness. As well, as a tool for decolonisation, rehabilitation, mindset change, and personal growth, building confidence and promoting inclusiveness within various communities.
